Guidelines for authors as of August 18, 2020
The Revista EIA is a biannual Open Access scientific publication, the purpose of which is the refereed publication of science and research findings in the field of engineering, technological development and innovation.
ISSN: 1794-1237
e-ISSN: 2463-0950
The editorial process begins when the authors comply with all the requirements indicated below, any missing document or information will cause delays in the process and your manuscript will be without assigning an editor until the corresponding author provides all the mandatory information.
A manuscript goes to review, within the editorial flow, when all the mandatory complementary files that are requested have been delivered. And the manuscript is in the format indicated below, especially the way of citing in the text and the list of bibliographic references.
We invite all authors to provide their ORCID registration number, this will facilitate the handling of the metadata.
- Form and preparation of manuscripts
Manuscripts submitted to the Revista EIA must adhere to the submission standards set forth below. Otherwise, the Editor-in-Chief or the Editorial Committee of the Revista EIA reserves the right to reject the publication of works that do not adhere to the editorial policy or the ethical standards of scientific publications. The Revista EIA reserves the right to make formal modifications to the original text or the title of the manuscript.
1) The Revista EIA only accepts for evaluation and eventual publication, original and unpublished articles, of direct realization and exclusive authorship of the author, that do not violate or usurp the copyright of third parties. A careful revision of the texts is recommended, in order to avoid including citations or transcriptions of works that are not properly referenced. To verify this the Revista EIA uses Turnitin software. The similitid index higher than 10% may be grounds for rejection of a manuscript.
2) The Revista EIA accepts original and unpublished works in Spanish, English and Portuguese. The Editorial Committee recommends authors to write their text in English, as this will increase international visibility and citation, both for the authors and for the Revista EIA.
3) The submission of a manuscript must be accompanied by a "cover letter", requesting its evaluation for publication in the journal, declaring that the manuscript is approved by all authors, in which they must recommend possible evaluators (2 national and 2 international ) for the topic presented; and if necessary attach copies of the permissions to reproduce material already published.
Note: The Revista EIA does not make royalty payments for copyright, in case an article is presented that requires this, the Revista EIA will notify the corresponding author to withdraw the article from the editorial process, in case of refusal it is will proceed to reject such manuscript.
4) In writing, each corresponding author, on his own behalf and the other co-authors, must confirm that the manuscript submitted is original and unpublished, that it is not for the consideration of another journal or under study for publication in other forms, such as monograph , book chapter or website, and that it will not be submitted for publication in another medium until Revista EIA makes a decision. (Filling out the cover letter format is mandatory).
5) Manuscripts must be written in letter size and spaced and a half, with symmetrical margins of 3 cm, with a 12-point Times New Roman font. The title of the article must be in Spanish and English, without exceeding 20 words.
6) As it is peer review publication, the Editorial Committee approves its publication based on the concept of specialized reviewers.
7) Manuscripts must be submitted as follows:
7.1 Title page (first page)
This page should be presented in a separate page from the rest of the manuscript, and will contain the following information:
- The title of the article in Spanish (Portuguese) and English. This must adequately describe the content of the work. It will be short, clear and informative and without acronyms.
- The full name (or name and initial of the middle name, if any) and the first surname of the authors (or the two surnames joined by a hyphen). It is recommended that authors define their "bibliographic surname" by using a single surname or, failing that, the two surnames linked by a hyphen, to avoid confusion in the bibliographic databases. In the case of a corporate author, it is recommended that a minimum of one signer and a maximum of six appear. The rest of the participants will appear in an addendum.
- Report the data of each of the authors with full name, undergraduate university degree and the highest graduate degree obtained, email, position and institution where he works, postal and electronic addresses and telephone numbers. In addition, the identification document and date of birth, necessary for the entry of information in the Publindex, Colombia platform.
- Inform the data of the author to whom the correspondence should be addressed: name, postal address, email, institution where he works, telephone, fax with the respective code. The author of the Correspondence must have the consent of all authors for the publication of the article.
- The Corresponding Author is in charge of communicating with the Revista EIA and is responsible for including those who contributed as authors and collaborators, ensuring that all authors agree with the content of the article and that changes, such as: the order of the authors, the addition or removal of authors, has been approved by each author. The Corresponding Author is also responsible for keeping co-authors informed about the status of the article before and after publication.
7.2 Abstracts and keywords (second page)
It is the section that serves to present the work in databases, both national and international; that is why its writing is of vital importance. It must be done in Spanish and English. It will be 250 words or more, where phrases are included that make mention of the results to be published in the manuscript.
It must contain the following information:
- Objective: indicate the fundamental purpose of the investigation.
- Materials and methods: explain the study design, the laboratory test endpoints and the temporal direction (retrospective or prospective).
- Results: record the most relevant and significant results of the study, as well as their statistical assessment.
- Conclusions: mention those that are directly supported by the data and their applicability. The same emphasis should be given to positive and negative findings with similar scientific interest.
At the end of the abstract, ten or more keywords in Spanish must appear according to those included in the controlled languages of the strategic field corresponding to the subject of the article. It is recommended to check the different thesauri that are available on the Internet.
Next the title, the abstract and the keywords in English (title, abstract, keywords) will be attached. They must be a complete and correct translation of the abstract into English.
- 3 Body of the article (third page and following)
- When writing the text, the impersonal form is recommended (and the tense in the past tense, with few exceptions). It is convenient to clearly divide the article into sections, it is suggested to follow the following scheme:
- Introduction. It will be brief, concise, and should provide only the explanation necessary for the reader to understand the text that follows (including background on the topic). Only those references that are strictly necessary should be cited according to current and relevant criteria in relation to the objectives of the study. It should not contain tables or figures. It must include a last paragraph in which the objective (s) of the work is clearly stated.
- Materials and methods. It should include only the information that was available when the study plan or protocol was written. All the information obtained from its execution must appear in the results section. They will refer, if applicable, the characteristics of the center where the research was carried out, the period or duration, the characteristics and the selection and exclusion criteria, and the techniques used, describing precisely how the study was carried out and why a study was carried out in a specific way, and the type of design.
The methods used, the devices (indicate the brand, model and city of the manufacturer in parentheses, if applicable), the treatment guidelines (the drugs and products used must be cited with generic names and in lowercase letters), the statistical analysis, etc. ., providing sufficient detail so that the experience can be repeated on the basis of the information provided.
Where applicable, the ethical standards followed by investigators in both observational and experimental or quasi-experimental studies should be briefly described.
It must be listed for human studies that have been expressly approved by the local ethics and clinical trials committee (see "Ethical Responsibilities"). For animal studies, the approval of the corresponding local, regional or national entities must be included. The type of design should be concisely stated. Comply with the laws of the Republic of Colombia.
Provide references to established methods, including statistical methods, with references and brief descriptions of methods that have been published but are poorly understood.
Describe new or substantially modified methods, give reasons why they have been used, and assess their limitations.
When possible, quantify the findings and present them with the appropriate measurement error or uncertainty indicators (such as confidence intervals).
Avoid relying solely on testing statistical hypotheses, such as the use of "p" values, which do not provide information on the magnitude of the effect.
Define statistical terms, abbreviations, and symbols. Specify the software used.
In the reviews, in the sources section, it will be described where and how the information search was carried out.
- Results. They should be concise and clear, and include the necessary minimum of tables and figures, according to the type of work. They will be presented in such a way that there is no unnecessary duplication and repetition of information in the text and in the figures and tables.
- Discussion. Authors have to express their own opinions on the subject. The following stand out here: a) the meaning and practical application of the results; b) the considerations on a possible inconsistency of the methodology and the reasons why the results may be valid and their limitations, relating them to other important studies; c) the relationship with similar publications and the comparison between the areas of agreement and disagreement, and d) the indications and guidelines for future research. Authors should avoid claims about economic benefits and costs unless the manuscript includes corresponding economic data and analysis. Do not set priorities or draw premature conclusions from work that is still in progress. If justified, new hypotheses can be put forward, but they must always be clearly identified.
- Acknowledgments. They will only be expressed to those people who have clearly contributed to making the work possible, but who cannot be recognized as authors. All the people specifically mentioned in "Acknowledgments" must know and approve their inclusion in said section.
Technical assistance must be expressed in a paragraph other than the one dedicated to recognizing financial and material aid from institutions, which must be recognized under "Funding" and give rise to a potential conflict of interest.
-References.
1) Citation system used in the Revista EIA you will find it below in a detailed guide on how to make the citations for each specific case: books, journals, dissertations and theses, organization reports. All manuscripts, without exception, must have at least 25 citations and references, this is a requirement of scientific quality.
2) The references are included in the list ordered alphabetically according to the initial of the first surname of the first author of the article. The authors of the article should carefully verify that all citations in the text appear in the reference list. Only the references that were cited in the main text of the work, in the tables or in the figures should appear in the list. This means that other references should not appear in the list, even if the author consulted them during the preparation of the article. The text within each bibliographic reference must be written in Times New Roman, font size 12.
3) Below we give examples of the use of references in direct or indirect citations within the body of the article.
For example, a work published by authors Robert Adams, Jane Baker, and George Curtis in the year
2007 should be cited as Adams, Baker and Curtis (2007). If more than one work from the same year is cited for the same set of authors, lower case letters (starting with “a”) should be used after the year, to distinguish the references in the list at the end. If there are more than four authors, in the citation made in the text, only the last name of the first should be used followed by the abbreviation et al. For example, a work published by authors Robert Adams, Jane Baker, George Curtis, and Carolina Duque in 2009 must cited as Adams, et al. (2009)
4) Citations, bibliographic references and hemerographs are included at the end of the article, after acknowledgments (if present). The initials of the first and last names of all authors must be included.
Do not use et al. References must be based on indexed journals, books or patents (avoid using information obtained from the Internet). They are carried out in the following way:

- Instructions for digitation
1) The text must be typed in a single column, in 12 point Times New Roman font.
2) Paragraphs are justified to the left, leaving space between consecutive ones.
3) Do not leave more than one space between words; After a period, a single space must be left, just as after a comma, semicolon, colon or parentheses.
4) In Spanish texts, avoid the use of the periphrastic passive voice (verb to be + past participle), frequently used in English. Thus it is preferable to say (e.g.): "The mixture is prepared at 20 ° C".
5) Do not include page or section breaks.
6) Choose the hyphens well: the long or stripe (-) goes in pairs and joins the preceding and subsequent word; its use is similar to that of parentheses. The short dash (-) is the one on the keyboard, it is used between words and numbers, to which it is attached, that is, without leaving spaces, as a technical-scientific, period 2009-2015.
7) Avoid footnotes; If they are very necessary, they should only contain clarifications or complements of the work that, without affecting the continuity of the text, provide additional information that the author considers essential to include.
8) When acronyms or abbreviations are used, the full equivalence must be noted first, followed by the corresponding acronym or abbreviation in parentheses, and from now on only the respective acronym or abbreviation is written. Avoid excessive use of abbreviations and use only the most common.
9) The equations are prepared in the processor included in Word, in 12 point Times New Roman font.
10) The symbols included in the equations that represent constants, variables and functions, in Latin or Greek letters, must be in italics; mathematical symbols and numbers are not italicized, but normal font. Symbols should be identified after the equation or at the end of the article, in alphabetical order.
11) Words or phrases in the text that you occasionally want to highlight are italicized, not bold.
12) Figures must be named and referenced in the article, in strict order. The title of the figures is typed in the upper part as a separate paragraph from the figure. Photographs are cited and numbered as figures. The text of the figures should be raised in 12 point Times New Roman font and should not be in capital letters.
13) Images and graphics must be high resolution (3000 px by 2400 px / actual size 300 dpi) and must be sent both inserted in the text and in a separate electronic file (jpg or tiff format). Tables, charts and graphs must be sent in their original modifiable file.
14) Tables are not presented but tables, other than images, with a title at the top as a separate paragraph outside the table.
15) Decimals must be separated with a comma (,) and not with a period (.); and the thousands and millions, with a point. If the article is in English, the rules of this language will be followed in its American English format, in the case of figures, decimals will be separated by a point (.) And thousands by a comma (,).
16) The units, dimensions and symbols of the International System of Units (SI) 3rd edition in Spanish, 2019 should always be used. You can consult it at the following link: https://www.cem.es/sites/default/files /files/SistemaInternacionalUnidades.pdf
17) Colors are used in figures (graphs or photographs) always for the readability and good understanding of the reader.
III. Types of items
The Revista EIA mainly admits the works that present research results, of an engineering (or natural sciences) theme or the strategic fields and the transversal axes defined by the Universidad EIA as institutional focus; essays that contribute to the academic and scientific discussion of engineering in its various branches, among others.
The following is the type of article that can be sent to the Revista EIA:
Scientific and technological research and innovation article. Document that presents, in detail, the original results of completed research projects. It presents the original and unpublished production, results of research, reflection or revision processes. The structure generally used contains four important sections: introduction, methodology, results and conclusions. In no case will contributions such as publications not derived from research, abstracts, communications to conferences, letters to the editor, book reviews, bibliography, institutional bulletins, editorial notes, obituaries, news or translations of articles already published be accepted as research and innovation articles. , opinion columns or conjuncture.
- Editorial policy

The Revista EIA does not accept previously published material and will not consider for publication manuscripts that are simultaneously submitted to other journals, or redundant or duplicate publications, this that is, articles that substantially overlap one already published, printed or in electronic media. Authors must inform in the cover letter about shipments or previous publications of the same work, in whole or in part, which may be considered redundant or duplicate publication. It is necessary to cite and include the bibliographic reference of these previous publications in the new manuscript. These restrictions do not apply to published abstracts of communications, papers or conferences presented at national or international scientific meetings.
