Small and large-scale mining in Lower Cauca Antioqueño generates a significant contribution to the production of gold at the departmental level, being an engine for development and social investment in the territory (Camara de Comercio de Medellín, 2019). However, the mining industry generates a large amount of waste into the environment, which is stored in dam-type containment structures at a high cost and without any added value to the mining process (Beltrán-Rodríguez et al., 2018). On the other hand, the soils degraded by the mining activity of the small miner have become a problem for the development of the region, limiting the use of the natural resources that the territory possesses to enhance the skills, knowledge and abilities of the inhabitants of the region Lower Cauca (Güiza, 2013). These damages generated to soils in the region are due to rudimentary extraction processes and the uncontrolled disposal of waste after mining extraction by the small miner.
According to this outlook, it was necessary to create alternatives for the use of degraded soils from small-scale mining and mining tailings from large-scale mining companies present in the region in productive options through their transformation and utility for the construction industry.
For this reason, this research presents alternatives for the use of degraded soils and mining tailings in the construction sector through the manufacture of plaster mortars and concrete mixtures, thus representing not only an alternative of labor reconversion for the inhabitants of the region but also an alternative to use all the material that remains as waste after mining extraction, not only from mining companies in general but also from small miners, thereby mitigating the environmental impact generated by mining through a productive alternative.
