The Colombian National Standard NTC 1848:2004 establish two methods for the calculation of mass and conventional mass of standard weights: direct comparison and subdivision. The standard indicates that the subdivision method is the most appropriate for calibration of weights class E1 because it allows the highest level of accuracy and the required uncertainties for this kind of weights, but it is mathematically and experimentally more complex compared with the direct comparison method.

This article presents the results of implementation of subdivision method for the calibration of weights class E1 in the mass laboratory of Instituto Nacional de Metrología de Colombia (INM). The measurement results in the range from 10 g to 1 kg are compared with mass values reported by internationally recognized metrology institutes in order to demonstrate the degree of equivalence between them. The results shows an improvement of the Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMC) of mass laboratory compared with the values published in the Key Comparison Data Base (KCDB) of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM)
